Psychiatrist Jerry L. Halverson joins medical staff

Oconomowoc, Wis. – Jerry L. Halverson, MD joins the medical staff of Rogers Memorial Hospital – Oconomowoc as its medical director for adult services. He is the most recent addition to the growing team of dedicated behavioral health care providers at Rogers Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Halverson is a board-certified adult psychiatrist with a subspecialty in psychosomatic medicine, the care of patients with both medical and psychiatric diseases. He is known for his research and clinical work with treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders.

Dr. Halverson has recently been honored by his colleagues for clinical and leadership excellence. He has been selected for a 2010 “Forward under Forty” award by the University of Wisconsin Alumni Association and has also been awarded an American Medical Association Foundation 2010 leadership award for outstanding community and peer leadership as an early career physician.

He is the current president of the Dane County Medical Society and has been active within the county, leading many hospital and community-based mental health initiatives. He serves on the American Psychiatric Association’s Council on Advocacy and Government Relations and is a recognized leader within the Wisconsin Medical Society and the Wisconsin Psychiatric Association.

Dr. Halverson is a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at both the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine in Madison and the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He has spoken extensively on mental health disorders and advocacy efforts to academic, legislative and community audiences and volunteers as a community clinic psychiatrist.

Prior to joining Rogers Memorial, Dr. Halverson was the medical director of adult psychiatry at Meriter Hospital in Madison and was an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health where he directed the Treatment Refractory Psychiatric Disorders Program.

Psychologist David Jacobi joins clinical staff at Rogers Memorial

Oconomowoc, Wis. – David Jacobi, PhD recently joined the clinical staff of Rogers Memorial Hospital – Oconomowoc as a behavior specialist and clinical supervisor working primarily with pediatric residential patients in The Child Center.

Dr. Jacobi has an extensive practice background in the treatment of anxiety disorders in the United States and Canada. Dr. Jacobi has conducted research related to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) as it relates to children and their families.

He has been a member of the Anxiety Disorders Association of America since 2003 and has presented to numerous clinical and academic audiences. Prior to joining Rogers Memorial, Dr. Jacobi was a psychologist at BridgePoint Health in Sheboygan.

Hasanoglu, a board-certified addictionologist, joins hospital’s Milwaukee facility

West Allis, Wis. – Nezih Hasanoglu, DO, a board-certified addictionologist and family physician, has joined the medical staff at Rogers Memorial Hospital – Milwaukee’s chemical dependency services. Dr. Hasanoglu is the latest addition to the growing team of behavioral health care professionals at Rogers Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Hasanoglu has more than 20 years of experience treating addictions. Prior to joining Rogers Memorial, he served as medical director for the Center for Behavioral Health in Waukesha, Wis. Dr. Hasanoglu received his medical education from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Rogers Memorial Hospital offers intensive, structured treatment services for adults in all stages of addiction. The treatment team at Rogers Memorial uses components of the 12-step program to educate patients about addictive illness and facilitate the recovery process.

Rogers Memorial also provides residential treatment services for chemical dependency and assessments for impaired professionals at The Herrington Recovery Center in Oconomowoc, Wis. The center moved into its new eco-friendly building in September 2009.

2003 graduate of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Science joins ranks of Rogers Memorial psychiatrists

Oconomowoc, Wis. – Psychiatrist Aruna Tummala, MD has joined the medical staff at Rogers Memorial Hospital. Dr. Tummala has authored and presented on the topic of mental illness to academic audiences both in the United States and abroad.

Prior to joining Rogers Memorial, Dr. Tummala was a resident psychiatrist for the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals. She is a 2003 graduate of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, Bangalore, India. She was recognized for excellence and was the recipient of three awards during her internship at the Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences in Bellary, India.

Rogers Memorial Hospital Expands Spiritual Care Program

Christine Dawley to Serve as Hospital’s First Full-Time Spiritual Care Coordinator

Oconomowoc, Wis. – Rogers Memorial Hospital has hired its first full-time Spiritual Care Coordinator since the inception of its spiritual care program. Christine Dawley joins the Rogers Memorial Hospital system as a specialist who focuses on the spiritual component of the healing process.

“Christine has been a welcome addition to the Spiritual Care Program,” said Terri Schultz, Rogers Memorial’s vice president of nursing, who also oversees the spiritual care program. “Since her arrival, we have been able to expand the spiritual care program to additional service areas including The Herrington Recovery Center, our residential center focused exclusively on chemical dependency. She has been very well received by staff and patients alike – we are excited to have her.”

Throughout the hospital’s history, the need for spiritual care had been met through volunteer clergy. However, as the number of requests for spiritual care services has increased, Rogers Memorial has hired two part-time chaplains in the past four years.

Rogers Memorial’s program provides spiritual care resources for patients, including nine different spiritual reflections groups and one-on-one counseling. Dawley’s arrival signifies a further commitment to the program, said Schultz.

Dawley graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee with a degree in Music Therapy and later went on to receive a Master of Science in Community Counseling with an emphasis in Pastoral Care from Mount Mary College. She is a member of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, and the American Counseling Association.

“For many of our patients their spirituality, healing and recovery are closely linked,” Dawley explained. “It is an honor and privilege to meet the unique spiritual needs of each patient and I look forward to building on the excellent foundation of spiritual care already in place at Rogers Memorial.”

Jorgensen receives Spirit of Giving Award at Rogers Memorial’s 2009 Gala

Over 300 guests raise more than $125,000 at annual Rogers Memorial fundraiser

Town of Summit, Wis. – Oconomowoc resident Gary Jorgensen, chairman of VJS Construction Services, has received the Rogers Memorial Hospital Foundation’s annual Spirit of Giving Award.

“It’s a privilege to work within an organization that offers such support to individuals, families, and the community,” Jorgensen said.

“Gary is humble and kind. He exemplifies all the characteristics of a servant leader,” Foundation Executive Director Marion Heinz said.

More than 300 guests helped raise more than $125,000 at this year’s Celebrate the Light Gala, held by the Rogers Memorial Hospital Foundation at the Harley-Davidson Museum on November 14. Many guests wore their best leather pants, vests, and jackets in recognition of the venue’s namesake.

The event featured Suzy Favor Hamilton, three-time Olympian, who shared how the effects of depression shattered her Olympic dreams. Today, Suzy has come to terms with her illness and is speaking out in an effort to lessen the stigma of mental illness.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the Celebrate the Light Gala support the patients and programs of Rogers Memorial Hospital.

In recognition of National OCD Awareness Week, Oct. 12 to 18, 2009, Rogers Memorial Hospital, in partnership with the International Obsessive Compulsive Foundation, strives to raise awareness about the symptoms of OCD and the treatment options that are available.

Full-time medical director selected for inpatient eating disorders treatment program at Rogers Memorial Hospital Oconomowoc

Oconomowoc, Wis. – Nicolette E. Weisensel, MD has been named medical director for the inpatient eating disorder program at Rogers Memorial Hospital – Oconomowoc.

“Dr. Weisensel has been an incredible asset to our team,” said Theodore E. Weltzin, MD, who oversees Rogers Memorial Hospital’s team of more than 80 professionals specializing in the treatment of eating disorders. “Her contributions have significantly increased awareness within the medical community about the complexity of eating disorders.”

Dr. Weisensel is a board-certified psychiatrist who has lectured and presented nationally on the diagnosis and treatment of complex eating disorders in males and females.

She is a past recipient of the American Psychiatric Association Aventis Travel Fellowship and a current member of the American Psychiatric Association, International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals, and the Wisconsin Psychiatric Association. She will provide full-time leadership of the inpatient eating disorders treatment program at Rogers Memorial Hospital – Oconomowoc.

Former Olympian Suzy Favor Hamilton to Speak at Rogers Memorial’s 2009 Celebrate the Light Gala

Hospital, Foundation aims to remove the stigma of depression

Oconomowoc, Wis. – Suzy Favor Hamilton, three-time Olympic track athlete from Madison, Wis., will speak at the Rogers Memorial Hospital Foundation’s 2009 Celebrate the Light Gala on Nov. 14 at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee.

It was the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia when Hamilton’s life came to a screeching halt as she pretended to pass out after several runners passed her during the last 200 meters of the 1,500-meter race. Suzy was expected to bring home a gold medal, but instead she brought home an awareness of how deeply her depression had consumed her life. Once at home, she was able to take hold of her battle with depression and find happiness off the track. She will share her inspiring story with guests of the Gala and help raise awareness of this debilitating disease.

Suzy’s story made international news, but the effects of depression also hit close to home. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 9.5% American adults suffer from a depressive illness, with women experiencing depression about twice as often as men. In fact, a study by the Harvard School of Public Health found that, if current trends persist, depression will cause more human disability and early deaths by 2020 than war, cancer, traffic accidents and AIDS combined.

Each year, the Celebrate the Light Gala helps raise funds to provide hope, help and healing to those suffering from mental illness such as depression. The 2009 Celebrate the Light Gala will be held on November 14, 2009 at the Harley-Davidson Museum, Milwaukee. This event includes valet parking, cocktail reception, dinner, auction, program, and presentation of the “Spirit of Giving” award.

Dr. Jay Kasner has dedicated the last 15 years of practice exclusively to treating chemical dependency

Town of Summit, Wis. – Addictionologist Jay Kasner has been named the attending physician at Rogers Memorial Hospital’s residential center for the treatment of chemical dependency, the Herrington Recovery Center.
Kasner, of Delafield, is a board-certified addictionologist and has dedicated the last 15 years of his practice exclusively to the treatment of chemical dependency. Kasner has treated more than 6,000 patients in the programs chemical dependency service line, including those in Rogers Memorial’s inpatient detoxification and day-treatment programs. In the past 12 years, the Herrington Recovery Center has been selected as the treatment center for nearly 1,400 residential patients.
“With Dr. Kasner’s commitment to treating chemical dependency, it seemed natural to include his expertise as part of our investment into the Herrington Recovery Center,” said David L. Moulthrop, Rogers Memorial Hospital President and CEO. “With Dr. Kasner as a key part of the treatment team, the top-quality caliber of our care will be matched only by the beauty of our new facility.”
