Rogers Memorial Hospital is a nationally recognized leader in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder, obsessive compulsive-spectrum disorders and anxiety disorders. Rogers Memorial is one of the few places in the country offering intensive cognitive-behavioral therapy for children, teens and adults in a residential setting.
Bradley C. Riemann, PhD, is a leading expert in the assessment, treatment and research of anxiety disorders. Dr. Riemann leads a team of more than 40 highly trained staff who provide specialized treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety disorders.
Research suggests that the vast majority of people with an anxiety disorder respond well to our treatment approach. Patients receive intensive and challenging treatment in a structure, manageable environment though the use of a graduated exposure hierarchy and a strict application of cognitive-behavioral therapy.
We invite patients, families and referring treatment team members to contribute to developing the individual’s treatment plan. Family members are an important part of our treatment approach.
Prior to admission, prospective patients complete a free screening that is reviewed by the program’s clinical director to determine what level of care will meet the needs of each individual.
There are two levels of care are available at Rogers Memorial for children, teens and adults with anxiety disorders:
One of just two residential OCD treatment centers in the United States, The Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Center provides intensive and structured treatment for adults with severe or difficult-to-treat cases of OCD, OC-spectrum disorders and other anxiety disorders.
Intensive and structured cognitive-behavioral therapy is also offered at these residential treatment centers:
The Eating Disorders Center: For adults ages 18+ with co-occurring diagnoses of severe eating disorders and OCD or other anxiety disorders. Offers intensive cognitive-behavioral therapy interventions combined with a strong nutritional component.
The Child & Adolescent Center: For adolescents ages 12 to 18. Offers intensive cognitive-behavioral therapy for depression, OCD, OC-spectrum disorders, school phobia and other anxiety disorders, balanced with comprehensive adventure-based therapy.
The Child Center: For children ages 8 to 13. Offers intensive cognitive-behavioral therapy for depression, OCD, OC-spectrum disorders, school phobia and other anxiety disorders.
Provides intensive treatment for adolescents and adults with moderate to severe cases of OCD, OC-spectrum disorders and other anxiety disorders. The program meets four days per week from 3 to 6 p.m. and uses evidence-based treatment components. The primary goal of this program is to alleviate symptoms, while allowing continued involvement to fulfill family, school or work activities.
Our treatment approach is strict cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) combined with medication treatment and management. For people with OCD, OC-spectrum disorders (such as body dysmorphic disorder and trichotillomania), or severe anxiety disorders, graduated exposures to thoughts or situations that produce anxiety are essential.
Each patient’s program is individualized to meet his or her needs and goals. Patients meet individually with members of the treatment team to complete a comprehensive exposure hierarchy, which ranks the level of anxiety for each feared situation. This hierarchy becomes the road map for treatment and is used to direct the team as to what areas heed to be addressed and at what pace.
Outcome studies of CBT treatment done at Rogers Memorial show that up to 80 percent of the people who complete our CBT program significantly reduce their anxiety symptoms from a severe to a much more manageable level.
These outcomes are consistent with a study published by The New England Journal of Medicine in 2008. The Child/Adolescent Multimodal study (CAMS) showed that a combination of pharmacological and CBT approaches have a far greater impact on symptom reduction than either approach administered alone.
Family members are an important part of treatment and recovery. In many instances, therapy or education sessions that include family members are provided. In addition, staff work with the patient and family to anticipate issues that may arise after discharge, and then help the individual and family develop a plan that best meets that patient’s recovery needs.
All treatment team members work under the under the direction of Bradley C. Riemann, PhD, a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in the treatment of OCD and anxiety disorders.
During treatment each patient is assigned to a core clinical team who conducts a detailed assessment, develops the treatment goals and exposure hierarchy, then facilitates and monitors the patient’s progress. Depending on the level of care, other appointments through the week may include a session with the clinical director, a psychiatrist, as well as group-based therapies.
With patient consent, the treatment team will provide ongoing written and/or oral communication regarding progress and the coordination of continuing care with the primary care and outpatient providers.
